Tips for Entertaining Kids During the Summer While Working from Home

Many parents are finding themselves working from home either part-time or full-time since the pandemic. While working from home can be a blessing as it allows us to spend more time with our families, this new ability poses some challenges especially when the kids are off from school for the summer. Finding the balance between work and kids can be difficult. With the right planning, being productive at work and being present with your kids can coexist. Below are some helpful tips to entertain your kids while working from home.

Create a Routine

Similarly to adults, children do well with schedules and routines. Having a daily schedule can be extremely helpful. For example, set certain expectations for working hours, playtime and breaks together. By creating expectations for children through routine, there will be less challenges as kids thrive on having predicable schedules.

Have a Kid Friendly Area

While you’re busy working it’s important for your kids to have a separate area to play safely. Not only will this be helpful to reduce distractions during your work time, but it will also allow your kids to have routine. In this space you can set up art, board games, and puzzles.

Incorporate Educational Games

Of course, its summertime and your kids are excited to have a break from school, but it’s important to provide them with educational activities as well. Screen time is okay but it’s important to do it in moderation. Consider including screen time in educational play!

Involve Learning into Play

While your kids have a break from school, they will be eager to play more. Playtime can be both fun and educational. Offer puzzles and toys that allow them to practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Doing this allows your kids to be engaged in fun and also practice valuable cognitive skills.

Outdoor Time

Allowing time for outdoor activities is extremely important. Physical activity and fresh air allow kids to burn off that much needed energy. For example, they can play a game outside, or you can go for a walk together as a family. This is not only a good opportunity for the kids but also for you to take a break in your busy day.

Communication and boundaries

Talking with your kids about the importance of your work is helpful to establish expectations. Being open and teaching them appropriate boundaries while you work will be important for a success balance. For example, each morning tell your kids when you have meetings, so they know not to disturb you during this time. Give them a time that you will have a break, so they know what to expect.

Working from home while the kids are home on summer break can be challenging but remember finding a balance between your work and family time is possible. You got this!
