February Blues

Now that we have had a month to settle into 2022, many people are feeling the “February Blues”.

Covid-19 is still rearing its ugly head. The temperature in the surrounding Philadelphia area is bitter cold and gloomy. Both children and adults are struggling to find their smiles, even under the physical mask we wear daily.

Below are suggestions to help get you through these “blues”.

Organize your affairs

When we organize our personal affairs we can help unblock our minds, sleep better at night and focus clearer during the day. Check your insurance coverage, organize and prepare your tax documents, and clean out your closets and pantries. As we are spending more time inside and less time traveling, it is a wonderful opportunity to declutter your physical space and your mind. Assisting your children in doing this can help them feel lighter as well.

Daily Diet

Regain focus and control over the important things like:

  • Eating healthy (3 meals, 2 snacks a day)

  • Drinking 60-70 ounces of water a day (eliminating high sugar drinks)

  • Sleeping (getting the amount needed for your age each night)

  • Activity (low impact daily activity to connect your mind and body)

  • Mindfulness (daily practices to improve mood and affect)

Modeling Positive Behavior

Remember, our children no matter what age follow our lead. If we are working on our own self-care, they will follow.

Television and Electronics

No matter your age, it is important to give yourself daily boundaries from all electronics. Be mindful of the intensity of the news and what you watch before bedtime and what you expose your children to as well.

Map out things to look forward to in the coming months

Allowing yourself to look forward and find the joy and excitement in your life can assist in getting through the February Blues. Be kind to yourself. Be forgiving to yourself. Do something small just for you each day. Find gratitude in your daily life.
